London Restaurants - Fish 'n' Chips
The London 2012 UIG guide to London Restaurants – Fish ’n’ Chips
Here's an interesting fact you might not know...Fish 'n' Chips, that most tradtional of English dishes, is one happy result of London's place as a center for immigrants. Numerous races, peoples and nationalities have flocked here for centuries, and fish and chips came about as the result of the convergence of fried-potato sellers from Ireland and Portuguese Jews, who imported the technique of battering fish.
What they created might well have been overtaken by chicken tikka massala as Britain's favorite meal, but fish and chips is about as English as you can get.
It's a common meal on a Friday night, when people have just finished their working week and feel like treating themselves, and it's also very common among those who go to watch a football (soccer) match on a Saturday afternoon.
There are a few good fish and chip restaurants in London, athough not as many as in years gone by, and those that remain tend to be for take away (take-out) only.
However, one of my favorite fish 'n' chip restaurants happens to be in Soho (Berwick Street), which is in the center of London. It gets busy there, especially on a Friday lunchtime, but it's worth a visit. Here it is on a map:
