“10 Reasons Why London, England Will Be a Great 2012 Olympics Location”
1. The Games will largely take place in a purpose-built 500-acre Olympic Park with enough seating for more than 180,000 spectators and state-of-the-art facilities. The Olympic Park will include six different venues, including the Aquatics Centre, the Velodrome and Basketball arena. A network of footbridges and walkways will allow for easy movement between these venues
2. There will also be plenty on offer that will be free to watch, such as the marathon, road cycling and triathlon events
3. Approximately 8,000,000 tickets have been made available for the Games, with another 2,000,000 for the Paralympics. Subject to availability, tickets will remain on sale until the start of every event and every ticket will include free travel on public transport in London for the day of the event, to encourage spectators to use the transport system and take in the festivities throughout the city
4. Transport in London has also been given increased importance to make sure that all spectators can access Games venues in the shortest possible time, either by public transport, on foot or by cycling. New and/or improved railways and cycle lanes are currently being added to London’s infrastructure
5. London accommodation during the Games will be plentiful, with over 100,000 hotel rooms to choose from, with options for every taste and every budget, from the world-famous Claridges Hotel to student accommodation and serviced apartments
6. The 2012 Olympics in London aims to be the most environmentally-friendly Games ever, cutting down on carbon emissions, efficient water use and using recyclable material to reduce waste
7. London boasts a rich sporting heritage. With its love for sports and as the location of many such events in the past (for example, the 1908 and 1948 Olympic Games, the 1966 World Cup, the 1996 European Championship), it’s fair to say that London is always up for the next big event
8. London’s place among the world’s most diverse cities is secure, as its inhabitants come from every corner of the world and more than 300 languages are spoken in the city
9. London’s Heathrow airport (LHR) is the world’s busiest and is already used to handling huge passenger numbers every day of the year. But Heahrow is not London’s only airport – there is also Gatwick to the south of the city, City Airport in the Doclkands and close to the Olympic Park and Stansted and Luton airports to the north of the capital
